Power ratings can be expressed in many different ways, like WATTS and KILOWATTS, or KVA. How do we define them ? The term Kilo-volt-amperes (KVA) is well known in the diesel generator industry . As for the Kilowatt (KW), is a much more common term for you. It might appear in the specification or tag of your home appliances. Or even shows in your electricity bill.

### Actual Power

Therefore, we can call kW the actual power, which is the total amount converted to output power.

### Apparent Power

on the other hand, is a kind of apparent power measurement: it describes the total power used by a system, for example, in a 100% efficiency of system, kW is equal to the kva in reality, however, the efficiency of the power system is not 100%, so not all of the apparent power system is used for useful power output is equal to 1000 volt ampere v 1 kva is actually measuring electronic pressure, amp is the method of measuring current with a known as apparent power (S) of the absolute value of complex power equal to the product of the volts and amperes

### Power Factor

Diesel generators have a power factor of 0.8. If you know this, it is easy to convert kVA to kW, because you know that the efficiency of the power system involved is usually expressed as a power factor between 0 and 1. Therefore, the closer the power factor is to 1, the higher the efficiency of converting kVA to actual kilowatts

#### The kW to kVA Formula:

Apparent power (kVA) x power factor(pf)  = actual power (kW)

For example ,

100 kVA x 0.8 = 80 kW
